Abstract

The municipality of Santos is a national reference in basic sanitation. The present study evaluated the evolution of the quality of rainwater in the seven channels of Santos, based on studies carried out between 2005 and 2013. Based on the results of 3 previously published works, a comparative analysis was made on the water quality parameters. In all channels, significant and consistent changes were observed between the sample campaigns, the last (May / 2013) being the one that indicates the worst indexes. It was also observed that periods of low rainfall present worsened conditions in several parameters, since the renewal of the water in the channels is not favored in these seasons. Measurements of enterococci on the beaches, on the other hand, show greater contamination at times coinciding with vacation periods (even with high rainfall). With this, taking as a base the observed samples, there is clearly a progressive degradation of water quality in the sampling period and, although Santos is considered a reference in sanitation, the levels of contaminants suggest evidence of illegal sewage in the region.
