Abstract

The herbarium of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais is the biggest of Minas Gerais State, with 178,000 specimens. There are significant collections of several existing vegetation domains in the state of Minas Gerais, especially collections of forest formations of the Atlantic Forest and Campos Rupestres of the Espinhaço Range and Iron Quadrangle. The groups best represented in BHCB herbarium collection are the flowering plants and pteridophytes (ferns and lycophytes), the latter collection consists about 27,000 specimens. The BHCB collection has about 650 type specimens and  about 82% in a database that is available through the INCT Virtual Herbarium of Flora and Fungi of Brazil. A brief history and the collection features are described.
