Abstract

This study assessed the toxicity of environmental and legal concentrations of phenolic compounds on aquatic biota and their ecological risks. Ecotoxicological assays were performed in the laboratory using the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus, according to ABNT 15350. The results indicated ecological risks for the introduction of these substances in marine ecosystems, and the need for revision of current environmental legislation regarding the allowed concentrations of phenolic compounds in industrial and domestic effluents.
