Abstract

The HAS Herbarium, located in the city of Porto Alegre, is a part of the Museum of Natural Sciences of the Zoobotanical Foundation of Rio Grande do Sul. It was inaugurated in 1975, named after the plant scientist Alarich R. H. Schultz. It is registered in the International Association for Plant Taxonomy and listed in the Index Herbariorum, to which it is also a Faithful Depositary. Its register of 131,000 collection entries and 227 nomenclatural types includes angiosperms, gymnosperms, pteridophyta, briophyta, algae, fungi and lichenized fungi. Most of its specimens are samples from the Rio Grande do Sul flora. It is ranked third among the herbariums with the largest registries in Rio Grande do Sul. The most represented plant families are Asteraceae, Myrtaceae, Fabaceae, Bromeliaceae and Euphorbiaceae. Nationally, it has the largest number of liquid-filled lots containing continental microalgae and of permanent petri dishes containing Bacillariophyceae.
