Abstract

The herbarium João Murça Pires (MG), of the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, its collection area, main features of the collection, as well as a brief history of projects and contribution to Amazonian flora knowledge are presented here. The MG herbarium was the first created in the Amazon and currently has 216,120 specimens, including vascular plants, bryophytes, fungi and lichens, and associated collections (seedlings, essential oils, pollen slides, wood and dried fruits). The collection includes 3,231 types and historical collections of important botanists such as Jacques Huber, Ernst Ule, Richard Spruce and Adolpho Ducke. Several projects conducted at institution, including a wide range of disciplines, are supported by the herbarium, which also offers services to society. Exchanges of duplicates with Brazilian and international herbaria are performed routinely.
