Abstract
In the Barra do Una Sustainable Development Reserve, on the southern coast of the State of São Paulo, a survey was carried out of vessels that are equipped with internal combustion engines, with special emphasis on those that burn fossil fuels with the presence of lubricating oil. The objective of the work was to establish the ideal level of effort for using engines to minimize the volume of lubricating oil that does not receive adequate treatment regarding disposal, and to estimate the amount of lubricating oil that is consumed monthly by vessels and dumped into the waters. of the estuary within the Conservation Unit. The small village has 2 boats with diesel engines and 15 boats with gasoline engines that mix lubricating oil with combustion. The result points to the absence of specific locations for the collection of used lubricating oil and points out the indicated technical values for engine rotation to minimize its dumping in estuarine waters, which can vary from an estimated minimum of 9 liters/year with just one vessel. up to significant potential values of more than 5,000 liters/year under maximum use of the 15 vessels. Given the results obtained, it would be more convenient for the Barra do Una Sustainable Development Reserve to use four-stroke engines on boats, since two-stroke engines are potentially more polluting.
