Abstract

The Orquidário Municipal de Santos was opened in 1945 in an area dedicated to football sports. Inside, there were already Jambolões Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels, planted before the delimitation of the Park area. Over the years, other tree species were introduced to house the collection of Orchids from the Indigenous Park, a private farm that once existed in the region. Currently the Orchidarium has around 1020 arboreal specimens (greater than 2 m), distributed in 52 families, 128 genera and 174 species. The families with the largest number of species are Fabaceae, Myrtaceae, Arecaceae and Bignoniaceae. The most abundant species are: Jerivá Syagrus romanzoffiana Cham . Sabiazeira Miconia prasina (Sw.) DC. Areca-bamboo Dypsis lutescens H. Wendll, Suinã Erythrina speciosa Andrews and Embaúba Cecropia pachystachya Loefl. The majority of species are native (70%), but not all of them originate from the Atlantic Forest and associated ecosystems existing in Baixada Santista. Most of the species were introduced by the management team over the last 30 years, but there was a significant participation (31%) of fauna in the dispersion of the most abundant specimens. Zoochory is also found as a dispersal syndrome in 116 species (67%). The arboreal individuals were plotted on a map of the Park (scale 1:600 m), using the positioning of other trees, flower beds, furniture and buildings as a geographic reference. This mapping made it possible to aggregate concepts related to quality, quantity and distribution, allowing important data to be obtained in institutional botanical management and planning, in addition to assisting in Environmental Education work.
