Abstract

One of the greatest challenges facing human beings today is transmitting values aimed at responsibility for the common good. The great pillar of humanity is education and its training is developed in schools, but without a pedagogical plan focused on Environmental Education, the commitment of the school community to the environment in which it lives becomes practically extinct. The school has a responsibility to help create a socially responsible society aiming at sustainability that is linked to the economy, preservation and social justice. Using the environmental perception that each individual has. The Eco Escolas program, implemented by FEE- Foundation for Environmental Education since 1990, seeks the interaction of everyday sustainability through actions in school life, providing an integrated environmental management system for schools based on an ISO 14001/EMAS approach. This study aimed to carry out an environmental diagnosis at the Prof. Maria Thereza da Cunha Pedroso State School and the Deputado Antônio Moreira Coelho State School, both located in São Vicente - São Paulo. The results were obtained through surveys carried out with students and audits on the topics of water, waste, energy, mobility, noise, biodiversity, sea, forest, school exterior spaces, organic agriculture, food and environmental management. Through the analysis of these results, it was concluded that the themes with the best environmental performance are mobility, energy and external spaces. It was found that the higher the environmental management performance index, the better the results of the other indexes and consecutively the higher the global index. The overall index of Escola Maria Thereza was 30.13% and Escola Deputado was 39.25% due to the themes of environmental management, forestry, organic agriculture and biodiversity
