Abstract

The herbarium is a scientific collection of dried, organized and preserved plants, of great importance to the scientific community and society in general, as it helps to increase knowledge about local biodiversity. It is considered a great teaching tool in both science and related areas. The Montes Claros Minas Gerais herbarium (MCMG) was founded in 2000 and is located at the State University of Montes Claros-Unimontes. Since its foundation, several implementations have been made, the most notable being in 2015, when MCMG became part of the Index Herbarium, a moment in which greater demand was observed, since from this period onwards, records began to be formally recognized and reach greater breadth in terms of territoriality and growth of the collection. In this sense, the objective of this study was to describe the activities carried out at MCMG, in order to present the dynamics of the herbarium since its inclusion in the Index Herbariorum in 2015, as well as its implementation in the same year. Currently, the collection has approximately 6,500 exsiccates, already registered, distributed among 1,062 species and 140 families. The families with the highest number of falls are: Fabaceae, Myrtaceae, Melastomataceae, Rubiaceae and Bignoniaceae. In addition to scientific research, the herbarium carries out other activities, such as: lectures, interviews with the media, visits to schools and universities, among others. Therefore, it is necessary for investments to be made in this area, in order to maintain the integrity of the collection and its implementation.
