Abstract

The Herbarium of Maranhão (MAR) was created on July 8, 2013, in the Biology Department of the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA), São Luís. It has a collection of approximately 8,500 samples available for physical and virtual access. It develops teaching and extension activities with the aim of clarifying doubts regarding plants and their applications and ecological functions to the public. The Herbarium carries out a range of activities aimed at both communication and scientific dissemination. With emphasis on the production of texts such as that of the UFMA Science Portal Magazine entitled “Library... of plants - Herbarium at UFMA reveals the botanical diversity of Maranhão” and presentation of the Project “Botany in 5 Senses” at the National Science Week and Technology. The participation of the Herbarium team in events and in the production of articles contributes to the dissemination of information on botanical studies, in addition to contributing to scientific dissemination work. In view of this, the importance of reducing the distance between science and society by carrying out extension work to show what has been studied and developed in scientific areas stands out.
