Abstract

The white sand beaches and crystal-clear fresh water of the Tapajós River in the village of Alter do Chão are one of the main tourist attractions in the region of Santarém, PA. Here we present the extension project “Praias Amazônicas Boraris” which aims to enhance the beach vegetation of Lago Verde dos Muiraquitãs de Alter do Chão. The project involves the Federal University of Western Pará, through the HSTM herbarium, the only active herbarium in western Pará, and the Borari indigenous community in mapping, identifying and surveying plant species on the beaches. The project includes the training of community tourism agents, the production of a photographic identification guide with ethnobotanical information and posters for publicity and environmental education. It is expected that, with the appreciation of beach vegetation in tourist activities, tourism agents, tourists, and the village community will promote and monitor its conservation. Currently, there is great pressure on the beaches, with real estate speculation, many subdivisions and hotel developments, especially, but not only, in the savannah regions and APA Alter do Chão, and the urbanization of the town center, resulting in environmental damage to the ecosystem, which could potentially harm the community's biggest tourist attraction and economic base. The HSTM herbarium team strives to encourage this empowerment on the part of community members, offering workshops or promoting discussions about beach vegetation and its importance.
