Abstract

The urban environment is the result of interactions between environmental, cultural and socioeconomic factors, mediated by human action. Within this context, urban parks emerge, contributing to the achievement of a good quality of life in the context of cities. The objective of the study was based on the preliminary environmental characterization of the area that houses the Taboão Ecological Park. The research was developed through field trips and bibliographical reviews. The preliminary results indicate partial protection of the ecosystem through the isolation of areas of ecological interest, the protection of flora and fauna and their habitat, opportunities for recreation and environmental education, opportunities for scientific research, improvement of the quality of life of residents and visitors, among others. It is concluded, among others, that there is no definition of urban park in the Brazilian legal system; and, among other considerations, the presence of the Taboão Ecological Park in an urban area ends up inserting society into the context of concerns with environmental conservation.
