Abstract
The Santos seashore front garden is 5.335 km long along the beaches of José Menino, Gonzaga, Boqueirão, Embaré, Aparecida and Ponta da Praia. With an average width of 45 to 50 meters and an area of 218,000 m², it was designed in the beginning of the 20th century by Saturnino de Brito, complementing the city's sanitation plan. With an eclectic, formal design, intended for contemplative landscaping it was planned in 1910, with the purpose of public use. The inauguration of the first section located between channels 2 and 3 took place in the 1930´s. During the months of February, March, September, October and November 2020, 1456 individuals belonging to 61 species were counted in the seafront shore from Divisa to Canal 6. Most of the trees, shrubs and palms are exotic (n = 64%), showing their predominantly landscape feature. The most abundant species are the Chapéu-de-sol Terminalia catappa L. (n = 710) and the Jerivá Syagrus romanzoffiana Cham. (n=99). The richest families were Arecaceae (n=17), Bignoniaceae (n=5) and Fabaceae (n=4), respectively. Santos seashore front garden is one of the few larger green areas in the municipality. The identification, mapping and monitoring of its species is an important tool for environmental management.
