Abstract

The loss of species due to deforestation has been frequent, especially in the vicinity of cities. Green areas can be refuges for some birds, despite the frequent use and isolation pressure to which they are submitted. The Municipal Botanical Garden of Santos Chico Mendes has an area of 9 hectares and has vegetation composed of about 300 species. The first systematic list of birds was made in 2003, covering an itinerary of 1162 m during 120 h, obtaining 62 species. In 2009, a new survey counted 82 species, using the same methodology. In 2020 the sightings from the 22 m observation tower were added to the original route. In addition, punctual records were also considered over these 17 years. The 2021 cumulative list reached 102 species, belonging to 34 families and 14 orders. The Passeriformes order was the most representative (n=55). Tyrannidae (n=18), Thraupidae (n=11), Falconidae and Ardeidae (n=6) were the most representative families. The present work was elaborated in order to present the species found so far in the Park and to discuss the alterations that occurred in the richness of the inventories.
