Abstract

The conservation of species, especially those at risk of extinction, often involves the establishment of protected areas and, in some cases, the relocation of individuals to new locations. Both approaches should be based on considerations relevant to the ecological niche of the species in question. There is no doubt that human action has reduced the abundance and range of many species. In this sense, the application of ecological knowledge through on-site diagnostics is an important tool in the proposal and development of public policies for the education and management of green areas as alternatives for leisure and as environmental conservation strategies. Thus, the present study aimed to complement the environmental diagnostic previously carried out in an area known as “Mato do Júlio”, in the municipality of Cachoeirinha, RS. The results obtained reveal a complement of fauna records, in the order of ten species for the araneofauna, in addition to the confirmed presence of the lizard known as the glass snake, Ophiodes striatus (Spix, 1824) (Diploglossidae Cope 1865) and the southern wildcat, Leopardus guttulus (Hensel, 1872) (Felidae); while for birds, seven families are added, covering another 28 species of this group, of which only three are considered migrants. Such data confirm and strengthen the thesis of the need for a greater number of studies in the region.
