Abstract

This study addresses flooding caused by stormwater and marine contamination in coastal urban areas, focusing on one of the urban macrodrenage channels in the city of Santos, SP, Brazil. The objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of strategies to optimize the macrodrenage system of Canal 4 in Santos, SP, Brazil, through a hydraulic model. The SWMM software was used to simulate the drainage system’s behavior based on hydrological and hydrodynamic data, identifying bottlenecks and assessing the effectiveness of the proposed solutions. The results show that the measures can reduce flood risks and improve water quality, serving as a reference for other coastal cities facing similar challenges. However, it is important to note that this study has limitations. The system simulated only urban macrodrenage, disregarding the microdrainage system. Additionally, only one precipitation event was simulated; longer simulation periods should be conducted to evaluate different precipitation and sea level conditions.
