PHARMACEUTICAL CARE IN THE INDISCRIMINATE USE OF OPIOIDS
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the 1990s, health professionals' lack of knowledge about pain management resulted in increased prescription of opioids, leading to overuse, drug diversion, disorders, and overdoses, triggering an epidemic in the United States. This study addresses the risks of opioids and their impact on public health. Using the PUBMED® database, articles from the last five years related to the topic were selected. Tolerance and dependence on opioids require higher doses and cause withdrawal symptoms. Appropriate prescribing guidelines and ongoing education are essential, as well as the implementation of Monitoring Programs to track inappropriate use. Pharmaceutical care, through therapeutic monitoring and guidance, can reduce negative impacts and promote safe practices in the use of opioids.
