Abstract

The indiscriminate use of medications has increased over the last 20 years, and is one of the main causes of poisoning in animals. This study aims to provide guidance on the risks of self-medication in domestic animals. After approval by the University's Research Ethics Committee, an online questionnaire with 13 questions was administered to students in the health field. Of the participants, 63.64% were women, 56.57% were between 18 and 25 years old, and 44.79% did not take medication without veterinary advice. Painkillers are the most commonly used over-the-counter medications, with 55.21% using dipyrone, which can cause serious side effects, and 58.33% using over-the-counter medications due to the high cost of veterinary consultations. Pharmacists are essential in guiding pet owners to prevent poisoning and other health problems for their pets.
