EXOTIC SPECIES INTRODUCED IN THE PORT OF SANTOS
Main Article Content
Abstract
The study aims to survey invasive species in the Port of Santos, emphasizing international trade and ballast water as the main vectors of introduction. Species such as the Gulf Toadfish have been found, causing ecological imbalances, competition with native species, and damage to infrastructure. Although control measures, such as ballast water inspection and vessel quarantine, have been implemented, the increase in maritime traffic and the lack of standardized global policies render these actions insufficient. It is concluded that it is crucial to enhance monitoring, utilize advanced technologies, and promote international cooperation to mitigate the effects of these species, as well as to raise public awareness about the importance of environmental protection in ports.
Keywords: Port, species introduction, ballast water, ecological imbalance, invasive species.
