Abstract
Leukemia is a hematological neoplasm that compromises the production and function of blood cells, originating in the bone marrow. It is characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation, which impairs the production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The main subtypes include lymphoid leukemia and myeloid leukemia, which differ in the affected cell lineage and clinical progression. Myeloid leukemia presents significant variety, being classified as acute (acute myeloid leukemia - AML) and chronic (chronic myeloid leukemia - CML), each with its own clinical and biological characteristics. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for the effective diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
