THE SEROTONERGIC AND NEUROPLASTIC RELATIONSHIP OF PSILOCYBIN: ADJUVANT MECHANISMS OF ACTION IN THE TREATMENT OF NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDERS AND ITS EFFICACY COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL THERAPIES
Main Article Content
Abstract
Psilocybin, when metabolized into psilocin, directly interacts with 5-HT2A receptors, triggering the reorganization of neural networks, especially in regions involved in emotional processing and mood regulation, such as the amygdala and prefrontal cortex. The aim is to explore the potential of psilocin in treating psychological disorders through modulation of brain connectivity. An integrative review was conducted between 2014 and 2024. The results suggest that psilocybin may be effective, depending on the administration context. It concludes that, although promising compared to SSRIs, clinical challenges exist and more research is needed to confirm its safety
