FROM THE SHORE TO DESIRE: THINNESS AND SYMBOLIC VIOLENCE ON THE BEACHES OF SANTOS
Main Article Content
Abstract
This work is an essay, structured through a literature review and the continuation of studies that address the concept of spaces of exclusion, linked to the stigmatization of the fat body and the desire for thinness. This reality has a gendered dimension and impacts women more strongly, affected by the pressure of normative aesthetics associated with thinness in a context of symbolic violence. In this essay, concepts such as: fat body, thin body, gender, violence, spatialities, and communication will be examined. This conceptual intertwining resulted in ideas about how the beaches of the city of Santos (SP) structure spaces of exclusion, where symbolic violence directly associated with the desire for thinness, historically and contemporaneously propagated, is reverberated.
