MANUAL THERAPY “POMPAGE” FOR RELIEF OF PAIN IN THE SHOULDER GIRDLE IN THE IMMEDIATE PUERPERIUM
Main Article Content
Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of manual therapy (pompage) for the relief of shoulder girdle pain in the immediate postpartum period. A case series study was conducted with ten primiparous women, between the second and third postpartum day, aged 18 years and older, admitted to a maternity hospital on the coast of São Paulo. The Visual Numeric Scale (VNS) was used to grade pain before and after the intervention. All women presented shoulder girdle pain (100%), with a higher prevalence in the upper trapezius (70%) and cervical paravertebral pain (60%). After the intervention, there was a significant reduction in pain graded by the VNS (p<0.004). The technique proved to be effective, notable for its low cost, easy application, and low risk of side effects, and can be incorporated as a physical therapy resource in the immediate postpartum period
