THE USE OF CANNABIDIOL AS A COMPLEMENTARY THERAPY IN THE TREATMENT OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER: A LITERATURE REVIEW
Main Article Content
Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by deficits in communication, social interaction, and stereotypies, with no specific pharmacological treatment available. this study aimed to review the literature on the use of cannabidiol (CBD) as a complementary therapy in asd. the research covered national and international databases from 2000 to 2025, using descriptors related to ASD, the endocannabinoid system, CB1, CB2 and GABA receptors, CBD, and Cannabis sativa. Findings suggest that cbd may reduce stereotypies and improve behavioral aspects, possibly through modulation of endocannabinoid and GABA receptors. It is concluded that cannabidiol represents a promising therapeutic alternative, although further clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety
