INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN THE BAIXADA SANTISTA: A PEDAGOGICAL EXPERIENCE WITH A TALKING CIRCLE AND TUG OF WAR IN THE 7th GRADE

Abstract

This article presents a pedagogical experience developed with 7th-grade students at José Carlos de Azevedo Jr. School, aiming to promote reflections on the Indigenous presence in the region since the arrival of the colonizers. The discussion addressed the term “discovery” and its importance for Portugal, focusing on the Tupinambá and Tupiniquin peoples. Using 2023 IBGE data on the local Indigenous population, the activity highlighted the Paranapuã Indigenous Land and Indigenous names present in neighborhoods of Santos. The methodological approach combined a talking circle and a tug-of-war activity, fostering the construction of cultural diversity and knowledge. The results indicate that the practice contributed to valuing Indigenous memory and promoting a critical understanding of the local reality
