Abstract

This study aims to characterize the impact of artisanal fishing in the estuary, using the gerival net, on the capture of white shrimp, Litopenaeus schmitti, over a 12-month period (June 2015 to May 2016). Monthly captures of the species occurred with the aid of the gerival net, in 20- to 30-minute casts, depending on the tides. A total of 1,021 individuals were captured, with a biomass reaching 3,934.72 g. The average length of the cephalothorax was 25.20 mm, with a minimum of 12.94 mm and a maximum of 38.84 mm. It is estimated that in 9 months, a single fisherman, working 20 days, will capture approximately 100,000 juveniles, which will not have the chance to complete their life cycle.
