Abstract

Oysters are bivalve molluscs with filter-feeding habits that inhabit mangrove regions. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that backwater oysters are larger than current oysters. Three current sites and three backwater sites were demarcated along the Una River, located in the Barra do Una Sustainable Development Reserve (Peruíbe/SP). Information on total weight, eviscerated weight, mantle weight and condition factor were obtained. The size of the oysters did not differ between current and backwater areas, demonstrating that the speed and flow of the Una River do not interfere with the growth of these organisms.
