Abstract

The main advantages of using water quality indexes are: ease of communication with the general public and the fact that they represent an average of several variables in a single number, combining different units of measurement in a single unit. Given the above, the objective of this study was to apply the Bascarán Quality Index (BQI) to the physical-chemical and microbiological results obtained in the study of the water quality of the urban drainage channel of Abílio dos Santos Branco Avenue, Praia da Enseada, Guarujá/SP, Brazil. The BQI results corroborated the laboratory analyses, making it possible to transform the technical information on the water quality of the Enseada Beach canal into simple language, so that all interested parties can understand the condition of this water body. Therefore, the waters of this canal were classified as poor, with direct repercussions on public health, tourism and the environment of the region.
