Abstract

In Brazil, studies have quantified different classes of drugs in the marine environment, which can cause biological effects on the local biota, among which the compound acetylsalicylic acid was found. Considering this aggravating factor, the present study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of the drug Acetylsalicylic Acid, through ecotoxicological tests with Echinometra lucunter, in order to assess acute and chronic effects. The tests were performed according to the protocol of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the Brazilian standard ABNT 15350. The results for acute and chronic toxicity indicated an IC50 above 100 and 63.73 mg.L-1, respectively, classifying AAS as a persistent drug, but one that does not cause degenerative effects when found in low concentrations in the marine ecosystem.
