Prevalence of Cardiovascular and Respiratory Diseases in Community-Dwelling Elderly Christiane da Silva Lessa, Francine Reis Tobias, Sheila de Melo Borges

Abstract
The objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases in the elderly in basic health units of the municipality of Santos/SP. For this were evaluated 286 elderly of the community of basic health units of the Municipality of Santos/SP participating in a thematic study entitled: "fragility Syndrome: identification and monitoring of the vulnerability in elderly users of the basic health units in the municipality of Santos/Sao Paulo". Among the 286 elderly, the average age was 72.99 (± 7.1) years, being the majority of females (n = 223; 77.97%). 192 elders (67.13%) reported having some cardiovascular disease, the most common being Systemic Arterial Hypertension (HAS) (n = 186; 65,03%). And, only 15 (5,24%) Elderly have reported having some respiratory disease. Thus, it was possible to conclude that there was a greater prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in relation to respiratory diseases, its principal being HAS.
