Abstract

This study aimed at the prevalence of blood pressure measurement in elderly residents of the community of Santos / SP. For this, a cross-sectional observational study was carried out with 292 elderly people attending Primary Health Units (BHU) in the city of Santos / SP. Data from the sociodemographic questionnaire and health conditions were used, in addition to blood pressure measurement. was observed that more than half of the elderly were classified as having optimal pressure (<120 X <80 mmHg) or normal (<130 X <85 mmHg) with n = 134 (46%) for optimal and 62 (21.2 %), followed by borderline 68 (23.2%) (130 - 139/85 - 89 mmHg), 11 (3.8%) stage 1 hypertension (140 - 159/90 - 99 mmHg and 2 (160 - 179 / 100 - 109 mmHg), finally only 6 elderly patients (2.0%) with stage 3 hypertension (≥ 180 / ≥ 110 mmHg). More than half (n = 154, 52.7%) UBS in your neighborhood and 178 elderly people (61%) take medication to control BP. Thus, it was possible to conclude that hypertension was not the most prevalent condition in the studied population, and this finding is positive for the health of the elderly, since alteration in this health condition can trigger numerous serious health problems and may also demonstrate blood pressure control of the study population.
