Abstract
Law 12.305 / 2010 established the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS), bringing responsibilities to the States, Federal District and Municipalities, providing conditions for the necessary progress in addressing the main environmental, social and economic problems arising from the inadequate management of solid waste. After completing 10 years of its effectiveness, it is important to survey the advances obtained, identifying results and eventually pointing gaps, opportunities not yet explored and indicating sustainable paths for the coming years. This paper aimed to report the situation of waste management in the municipality of Santos / SP between 2010 and 2018 where it observed a rate of waste generation higher the participation of the municipality in the total country. It was also noted that waste management has brought significant advances since the implementation of the selective collection program, while the Public Manager faces the challenge of adapting the final destination of waste and there are opportunities for revenue, employment and income generation. with the energetic utilization of the waste disposed in landfill.
