Abstract

The SAE 1045 steel has many applications and is commonly used in industry because it has low cost, high mechanical strength and ductility. The present study evalued the corrosion resistance of SAE 1045 steel in 0.5M chloride solution, applying the electrochemical corrosion technique of potentiodynamic polarization. After the evaluation of the experimental results it is possible to observe the electrolytic interaction and the surface of the metal immersed in 0.5 M chloride solution. The polarization curve presented by the tested material shows a typical profile of active material, that is, it doesn´t suffer passivation. The researchers found corrosion potential of -0.44 V and corrosion current density of 2 x 10-5 A cm-2.
