Abstract
Plastic ocean pollution is increasing everywhere, reaching 12 million tons per year. In this context, Circular Economy concepts are receiving more attention, especially when concerned with the reuse of fishing gear – most of them produced with synthetic materials – and discarded by fishermen communities. This kind of equipment is considered the most dangerous form of marine debris, because fishing nets tend to be extremely hazardous to sea life. This article researches the latest studies on the theme, and companies in different parts of the world, like Denmanrk and Chile, that are developing new strategies to promote the retrieval of fishing gear, transforming it in new products, creating jobs, increasing local profit and reducing environmental impact.
