Abstract
In recent years, Brazilian fish farming has presented a high growth, characterizing itself as a secondary activity developed mainly by family farming, whose predominant species is tilapia. This work sought to carry out a review on fish farming in small rural properties in the southern region of Brazil and its relationship with food security. It was found that the fish farming in this region is developed, mostly, in properties of up to 50 hectares, simultaneously with other activities (eg farming and livestock), and can result in contamination of water and fish by waste from them from. This scenario can interfere with food security, for not providing the availability of safe foods.
