Abstract

At the end of 2019, the beaches of northeastern Brazil were the target of a disaster involving the arrival of large oil slicks of unknown origin, which caused problems in the regional economy. Tourism and fishing were directly affected, in addition to great damage to biodiversity with the death of many marine animals. Recent works indicate the origin of the oil as Venezuelan, which is a highly weathered oil consisting of pristane, phytane and hopanes.[1]. These pollutants have harmful effects on marine organisms and human health, and analysis and debate on this topic to seek alternatives for understanding the dimension of damage.
