Abstract

The fishing activity in the Pantanal Matogrossense is very important from a cultural, social and economic point of view, but in recent years there has been a drop in fish stocks and riverside dwellers experience difficulties in maintaining themselves economically. On the other hand, sport fishing, very popular in the Pantanal, presents itself as an alternative source of income for these communities, who can use their traditional knowledge to dedicate themselves to activities related to fishing tourism, as this work pointed out. Fishermen demonstrated that they know important factors about fishing tourism and the practice of fishing and releasing, which contribute to a viable economic alternative for income supplementation, and which can contribute to the conservation of the resource.
