Abstract
Annually millions of tons of garbage are thrown into the oceans and a large portion is made up of plastics. Plastic is extremely harmful to the environment as it deteriorates and turns into microplastics and nanoplastics. Marine litter is responsible for the death of millions of animals every year. Most of the garbage originates in urban centers and shows the neglect of people and authorities. On the beaches of Boqueirão and Embaré in Santos-SP, various types of garbage were found, mostly plastic objects such as food packaging and their registration made by photographs. There is a need for greater inspection by authorities and raising awareness of the dangers to marine life.
