Polymorphisms of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) gene and cardiovascular diseases in Amazonian riverside communities exposed to mercury (Hg) via diet Jennifer Barbosa dos Santos, Paloma Kachel Gusso Choueri

Main Article Content

Abstract

Nitric oxide (NO) is a potent vasodilator with multiple protective effects involved in the regulation of cardiovascular functions. Environmental factors such as exposure to mercury (Hg) and polymorphisms in the eNOS gene (endothelial NO synthase) may increase the risk of cardiovascular damage. Thus, it is expected that the results obtained through the literature review will help to understand the molecular mechanisms related to the risk of cardiovascular diseases through exposure to Hg, as well as its modulation associated with polymorphisms and NO concentration.
