Abstract
Small-scale fishing is one of the first activities developed by humans. Fishers have extensive ecological knowledge of the environment they exploit and are not limited to a single economic activity. In this study, we investigated the importance of fishing for the seasonal fish species Mugil liza (Tainha) for a community of artisanal fishermen on the southern coast of São Paulo. The results indicate that they exploit two distinct environments to capture the Tainha, using gear adapted to the target environment of the fishing activity.
