Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify, through previous research, the main sources of microfibers in the aquatic environment and their impacts. In this context, the research was conducted through a descriptive literature review, employing a methodical analysis of scientific articles. The results highlight that the primary source of microfibers originates from textile materials, particularly due to the repeated washing of garments over time, with each wash releasing new fragments of microfibers into the water. Additionally, the additives incorporated into these fibers to enhance their durability are toxic and, upon entering aquatic environments, cause physiological alterations in organisms.
