Abstract
International Law and international organizations play a fundamental role in creating and monitoring policies developed from treaties and conventions to protect the marine environment and navigation safety, while at the same time contributing to the construction of the concept of a sustainable blue economy. The member state audit scheme of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), created in 2003 and mandatory since 2016, are examples of instruments that have been successful in implementing environmental quality standards in maritime transport, having results to the goals set by the organization and international courts.
