Abstract

Aluminum-based metallic alloys are known to be light and to present high mechanical properties as small amounts of solute elements are added. The morphology of grains resulting from solidification are important parameters that directly interfere with the final properties of metallic alloys. In this study, Al-20%Zn-2%Bi, Al-20%Zn-5.4%Bi, Al-5%Zn-0.5%Fe and Al-5%Zn-1.5% Fe alloys alloys were solidified in transient heat extraction conditions, in order to analyze the respective macrostructures. Columnar growths, columnar/equiaxial transition and twin dendrites were found.
