Abstract

With the advancement of plastic pollution and the increasingly evident impacts of microplastics (< 5 mm) in different environmental compartments, this systematic review aimed to synthesize and evaluate the main technologies addressed in Brazil (2023–2025) for their reduction and removal. The search in the CAPES Periodicals Portal followed the PRISMA methodology with predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. In total, 69 articles were investigated, of which only 2 met the selection criteria, both focused on the application of biotechnologies in aquatic ecosystems. The results highlight a national scientific gap regarding the absence, in the past two years, of studies on the reduction and removal of microplastics in other environmental compartments, including the human body
