Abstract

Visceral fat plays a relevant role in the risk of CV disease (CVD), and the link between adipose tissue and insulin resistance (IR), which characterizes metabolic syndrome (MS), is well established. Quantifying visceral adiposity becomes important to identify individuals at higher risk, candidates for early interventions in an attempt to reduce the impact of metabolic abnormalities on cardiovascular (CV) mortality. An observational, cross-sectional study was carried out, where 2,745 adult patients of both sexes were evaluated, selected from private cardiology practices distributed in the city of São Paulo. The expression of visceral adiposity and its relationship with the frequency of dyslipidemia, in both sexes, showed a significant association, resulting in a 2-fold increase in the diagnosis of dyslipidemia in those with visceral adiposity.
