Abstract
Cancer is the term used to describe a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth of cells that invade tissues and organs, potentially spreading to other parts of the body. Various risk factors interact to initiate the cellular changes present in the etiology of cancer. It is the second leading cause of death worldwide. The word still carries a negative symbolic representation due to its potential impact. The diagnosis is accompanied by a significant emotional burden and fantasies stemming from the fears of the individual and their family. Social inequality is also evident in the incidence of the disease. Early diagnosis is relevant in all contexts. There is a growing trend of cancer in Brazil, making risk factors, social, psychological, economic, and cultural aspects crucial for addressing cancer as a public health issue in our country.
