Abstract
Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin, it must necessarily be gained by food. The literature states that 1% of dementia in older are due to vitamin B12 deficiency. In addition to this population group, some others are at increased risk of vitamin deficiency: strict vegetarians, patients who have undergone bariatric surgery, atrophic gastritis patients, pernicious anemia, bad gastric absorption and some medications can interfere with the absorption of this vitamin. The deficit of vitamin B12 has consequences as changes in Central Nervous System (CNS), responsible for neurological / psychiatric disorders such as peripheral neuropathy, depression, cognitive decline, leading to dementia, whose severity and frequency are increased with age, as well as notes vitamin B12 deficiency. This systematic review aimed to analyze treatments with vitamin B12 doses were administered to reverse signs and symptoms related to dementia, psychomotor alterations and laboratory data, between 2011 and 2016.
