Abstract
This article is a bibliographic review on the Billings Reservoir, which is a source of great importance for the metropolitan region of São Paulo. It had been suffering environmental impacts directly caused by the Alvarenga landfill, which in turn was clandestine and generated fortunes for truck drivers. Many people, including children, worked there. With the closure of the Alvarenga landfill, this impact was contained, but for this to happen, it was necessary to prepare the former collectors, as they would be sent to two Ecology and Citizenship Associations, which were created with the aim of promoting social inclusion and minimizing the environmental impact caused by the generation of solid waste. To this end, it was necessary to have the participation of the local population, in addition to mitigating the environmental impact of their daily lives, generating raw materials for the workers of the cooperatives, and having citizens aware of their responsibilities regarding environmental issues, changing their attitudes and actions. Schools play a fundamental role because education today, based on what is covered by the legislation, must lead students to develop a critical mindset.
