Abstract

Introduction: Technological development has had an impact on the organization of work. For societies to benefit from the potential that technology offers, more investment in human capital, such as in continuing education, is needed. By knowing which competences are important for port work, these can be applied to education in this sector, both in the training of new professionals and in the qualification of those who already make up the workforce. Objective: to identify the generic professional competences required in the loading and unloading operations of the Port of Santos, according to the perspective of workers, unions, companies and institutions participating in port education. Method: port workers in the loading and unloading operations, professionals from companies, professionals from institutions participating in the education of port workers and union leaders evaluated the importance of 22 competences. To identify the desired skills profile, a network analysis was performed. Results: The competences that were not very relevant for port work were Communicating in another language and Ability to work independently. The key competences for the job were Analytical and synthesis capacities and Organizational and planning skills, indicating important points to be addressed in port education and further development of workers.
