Abstract

Obstetric violence is understood as a set of disrespectful, abusive, ill-treatment and negligent practices against the woman and the baby, before, during or after childbirth, by health service professionals. Such practices arise from medical paternalism and the withdrawal of the parturient from the role of protagonism within the scope of her own labor, seen as incapable and fragile, deprived of information about the physiological process. This article seeks to analyze the standardization of the patient's right to information and the doctor's duty to provide it. Afterwards, we seek to analyze the role of information as a guarantee of women's autonomy in the obstetric context and as a way of preventing obstetric violence practices.
